The former Russian spy, who came to Britain in 2010 as part of the spies' exchange, had expressed regret that he was a double agent and wanted to forgive, in order to visit his family in Russia, Vladimir Tymoshkov told British media.
Scribal and his daughter Julia are in critical condition following the March 4th nervous gas poisoning. Scripal (66) is accused of working for British secret service MI-6 for several years when he had discovered the names of Russian agents operating in Europe, KosovoPress broadcasts.
He was sentenced to 13 years of freedom in August 2006 and was released by agreement in 2010, when ten Russian spies were expelled from the US.
According to Tymoshkov, who has been a friend of Scripal since school days, he was not considered a traitor because he had sworn his oath in the ministry while he was in the USSR.
And we talked about half an hour. He called me from London. He then told me that he had written to the Russian president, asking for full forgiveness and allowing him to visit the family in Russia, where his mother, brother and relatives are, said Timoshkov.
Scripal's attempted murder has sparked diplomatic crisis between Russia and Great Britain.
Russia has dismissed the accusations, saying there was nothing against Scripal.
The former Russian spy and his daughter were poisoned with Novicok nerve gas.
