In Belgium, a scandal involving the quality of meat consumed by citizens erupted last week after the discovery that the firm “Vevaba”, one of the most important suppliers, has worked in unacceptable sanitation conditions, and manipulated meat content. Kosovo citizens have allegedly consumed this meat. Within a year from Belgium to Kosovo, no fewer than 200 thousand pounds of meat are introduced. Within the year, however, over 40 million pounds [40 million kg] of different meats enter Kosovo.
A food scandal has erupted in Belgium after the Federal Food Network Insurance Agency (FASFC) found that part of the meat produced by the company “Vevaba” has been broken.
The scandal has also affected many European countries that have allegedly consumed such meat.
No Kosovo remains intact. Kosovars are even suspected to have consumed a lot of such meat, coming from Belgium.
According to Kosovo Customs, no less than 200 thousand pounds of different meats enter our country each year from Belgium. This figure represents 5 per cent of the total amount imported meat to Kosovo within a year.
Import from Belgium is low in relation to the annual amount of meat import in general. From Belgium, on average, we have about 200,000 pounds per year, which represents about 0.5% of the entire import of meat, since within a year more than 40 million pounds of all species are imported together, according to our statistics most within a year Kosovo imports poultry (pul)”, has told Gazeta Express, the Stavileci Adriatic from Kosovo Customs.
It has shown that the origin of the meat, which is most imported in Kosovo, is mainly from the US, Brazil, Argentina and the Netherlands.
Stavileci has suggested that Kosovo Customs controls meat products within the context of the tax and exact assessment, while, according to him, for the quality of food imports (even meat) responsible is AUV (Kosovo's Food and Veterina Agency).
“... before the distribution of food goods starts should be inspected and certificates are presented for each import of food products, certificate issued by AUV”, he said.
And from the Veterina and Food Agency, they have indicated to Gazeta Express that 20 thousand pounds of rotten meat were eliminated in Kosovo in 2016, imported from Belgium's subx0> Veviba”.
The spokesman for this agency, Lamir Thaqi, has said the case had been discovered in Kosovo and the same firm no longer imports to our country.
During today's media reported on the quality of meat imported from Belgium, these reports suggested that the meat was broken. And it was the case of 2016.
“Some data are not true, the case occurred in 2016, no longer has the meat of this firm entered Kosovo. According to 2016 verification, in Kosovo, the load of 20 thousand kilograms of meat” has been eliminated, Thaqi told Express.
For the first time, the suspicious meat was heard in Kosovo in 2016, when a Kosovo entrepreneur warned Belgian authorities that from the company “Veviba” had received a shipment of broken meat. For almost two years, the company has operated unhindered until days ago when the scandal began to be seriously handled.
This news is being widely circulated in all Belgian media, as the company “Vevaba” has supplied most of the country's best-known supermarkets.
The media have interviewed company workers who point to poor hygienic working conditions as well as deliberate manipulation by company owners.
