Washington Post” has quoted statements by Kosovo Republic President Hashim Thaci during the annual Munich Security Conference, where numerous leaders from around the world have been among those present.
As this newspaper reports, President Thaci, as a panelwriter on the subject “Brenda or abroad? States between Russia and Europe” have said the first decade of Kosovo's independence was “a success story”, but he expressed regret for the lack of unity within the European Union over the Kosovo status issue as a candidate for membership.
“We are not yet members of the United Nations, while our journey to the European Union is complex”, Thaci said.
Five of the 28 EU member states do not have Kosovo's independence, the agency writes. President Thaci stressed that “if there is unity in the EU for Kosovo, I am convinced that the state of Kosovo would be a more stable and stronger country”.
The head of state has indicated that Kosovo is the most pro-European, pro-American and most pro-Western state in the Balkans, adding that “we are proud of this”.
Part of the panel where President Thaci was among the speakers were other dominant personalities, including the EU Policy Commissioner for Neighborship
European and Enlargement Negotia, Johannes Hahn, and senior heads and officials from Russia, Armenia and Moldova -- countries that have not yet recognised Kosovo's independence. Meanwhile, the panel's moderator was Ian Bremmer from the United States, president of the “Eurasia Group”, the world's largest political risk assessment consultancy.
Munich's annual Security Conference is considered the most important event in the world in terms of global security. .
The Washington Post reports that Kosovo, which is facing obstacles to its full citizenship accession, is marking Serbia's 10th anniversary of independence with celebrations for two consecutive days.
