Poland's president, Andreze Duda, said he will sign a Holocaust law, despite objections from Israel, the United States and Ukraine.

New law presents fines or prison sentences of up to three years for describing Nazi Germany's camps in Poland as “Polish death camp”

Public suggestions that the people, or Polish, have also participated in the genocide committed by Nazi Germany during World War II will be punished.

Poland's government says the law is necessary to protect the reputation of the Polish as victims of Nazi aggression.

Israel has reacted with concern, saying the law will ban real statements about the role of some Polish people who have played in Nazi crimes.

On 5 February, Israeli Education Minister Naphtali Bennett has said he will travel to Poland to discuss the law. But a Polish government spokeswoman has said Varshava has cancelled his visit.

Washington has also criticised the legislation.

“We are concerned about the consequences this bill could have on Poland's interests and strategic relations, including the United States and Israel”, US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said on January 31st.

Ukraine's president, Petro Poroshenko, has said on February 1st that it is “deeply concerned” by legislation.

Some historians say Ukraine's paramilitary nationalist organisation The UPA committed atrocities during World War II, especially against the Polish peoples in Ukraine.

In Poland, UPA fighters are considered deadly groups who were responsible for ethnic cleansing of Poles from what is now Ukraine's West.

In 2015, the Ukraine Parliament has recognised those who served in the UPA as <x0 fighters in Ukraine's” independence.
