Indonesia says it will build a new warning system, able to spot tsunamis caused by landslides below the sea, days after the huge waves caused by a volcano claimed the lives of at least 429 people.
Installation of the new facility will begin next year. It is thought that activity from the volcano “Annac Krakatau” caused landslides under the sea, which was followed by deadly tsunami. Officials say around 150 people are still missing appeals, and another 16 thousand have moved.
Rescue teams, assisted by heavy equipment, are going from village to village, searching in ruins to survive the hardest hit areas on the Sumatra and Java islands, writes Top Channel.
Coastal residents have been advised to stay away from beaches, amid fears that new volcanic eruptions could cause another tsunami.
Existing technology has failed to predict the tsunami that destroyed coastal cities around the Strait “Sunda” The system was set up to monitor earthquakes, but it was not the landslides under the sea and volcanic eruptions that can also generate deadly waves.
Due to lack of funds, vandalism and technical defects, there has been no “de facto” a warning system from tsunamis since 2012.
