The earth is much more alive than previously thought. According to life - forms studies, there is a rich underground ecosystem that is almost twice as much as the surface of all oceans.
Despite intense heat, light shortages, small amounts of nutrients, and high pressure, scientists estimate that the underground biosphere is filled with about 23 billion tons of micro-organism, which is hundreds of times the weight of all people in the world.
Researchers at the Institute “Deep Carbon Observatory” say that the variety of species of the underground world can be compared to that of Amazon or Galapagos Islands, but unlike these places, the living environment underground is in much clean and untouched by humans.
The team studying forms of underground life consists of about 1,200 scientists from 52 countries who specialize in various scientific disciplines, ranging from geology, microbiology, chemistry, and physics.
A year before the completion of their ten-year study, they will publish some findings at the annual meeting of America's Geophysic Union, writes the Guardian”,
