About 36,000 people participated in protests across the country on Saturday, but even though turnout was lower than the previous two weekends, protesters clashed with police, setting up and burning barricades and also burning cars.
The riots have been transformed by disagreements over rising gas and eco-tax prices in a broader demonstration against Macron, his government and tensions between the Metropolitan elite and rural poor, CNN reports.
Speaking on a radio in France, French government spokesman Benjamin Griveaux said the government was looking into “all options” to prevent “serious violent intrusions”, including the announcement of a state of emergency.
Almost 400 people were arrested in these protests, while four people have remained since demonstrations started more than two weeks ago, police said Sunday.
