Former President Donald Trump's attorney, Michael Cohen, was sentenced Wednesday to three years in prison after saying he has taken full responsibility “for his actions, while at the same time blamed the president, CNN reports.
His sentence will be the longest ever for anyone involved with the president or stemming from Robert Mueller's special investigation into Russian intervention in the 2016 elections.
“I take full responsibility for every act I am convicted of: personal ones and those involving the president of the United States of America”, Cohen said.
But he also said he was living in a “personal and mental prison since he started working for Trump.
The last “President wrote a statement calling me weak and correct, but for a very different reason than what he meant. It was because sometimes I thought it was my job to cover up his dirty works”, Cohen said.
This may seem hard to believe, but today is one of the most meaningful days of my life”, Cohen later added. I have been living in a personal and mental prison since the day I accepted the offer to work for a business real estate magnate”.
Within the courtroom, Cohen's family was evidently emotional. Cohen did not speak to reporters after leaving the court.
He was earlier convicted of eight criminal charges brought by federal prosecutors to New York and took 36 months for those crimes. Cohen was also found guilty of an accusation that he lied in Congress by Muller's team, for which he was sentenced to two months.
Cohen will do the sentences simultaneously.
