In 2011, on a surprising visit to Afghanistan, the Supreme Commander of the American Army, Barack Obama, stripped himself of civilian clothing to wear a leather jacket from Air Force. Willam Astor wrote that he believed that the president had made that gesture so that he could get closer to the troops and thus honor them all.
He says the president in that case has clouded the important difference between a democratic civilian and army members.
Although the president commands our army, he is not, strictly speaking, a member of it. He is above them, with the authority of the Constitution to command the army in our name. ”
Whenever the president is addressed to our troops, he must be dressed in civilian clothes, because this is him -- a civilian, very special, but simply civilian. /Periscopi
