Bush learned about the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor as a teenager, and six months later, on his 18th birthday, he enrolled in the US Marine Reserve. He continued to become one of the youngest airmen in the navy, and a photo officer was assigned to a Sipedum team.
During an attack against Chichi Jima, a fortified island that Japanese forces used for communications and supplies, Bush's plane, a TBM ANger, was hit with anti-aircraft fire. The two Bush crew members were killed in the attack.
Bush was eventually rescued by USS Finback, a submarine.
Following Japan's surrender in 1945, Bush was kindly dismissed from active duty and continued to attend Yale University.
Bush died in 94, Friday night. White House flags were lowered to half a dozen.
USS George HW Bush air carrier (CVN 77) was baptized in honour of Bush in 2006.
