We have a federal government that has been elected for this legislative period. Angela Merkel has said she's going to finish her mandate and the party congress has shown very clearly that this is what everyone wants and that's what I want. And I think as party leader, I have to ensure that this government has the stability it needs to fulfill its” mandate, Kramp-Carrenbauer said.
Kramp-Carrenbauer could get only 51% of the vote in the runoff, against its main rival, businessman and conservative Friedrich Merz. The third candidate, Jens Spahn, was eliminated in the first round.
Many in her party would like the CDU to become more conservative to face populist challenges. Although often called “Minnie Merkel” from the German press, Kramp-Carrenbauer distances itself from the German Chancellor with its more conservative policies. Its new task now is to renew the party with a clear course and open communication.
