More than 500 people have been taken into custody. At least 55 people have been injured, including three police officers, the BBC reports.
The demonstration is being held in several other cities, including Lyon, Marseille and Grenoble, where a local leader of the yellow chimneys is said to have been arrested.
In France, fuel prices have increased by about 23% over the past 12 months, to an average of 1,51 euros, the highest since 2000.
The decision to add 6.5 cents per litre of gasoline and 2.9 cents on the oil line, starting on January 1st of 2019, caused popular anger to explode in this form.
