The army has been scattered throughout the country with the intention of preventing violence. The country has also faced violence in previous elections, which had remained under the shadow of low voter turnout and boycott by the largest opposition group.
The “Awaami” party, led by 71-year-old Prime Minister, is in power from 2009 and has won the last elections, held in January 2014. Hasina has since been accused of authoritarianism and oppression of media and opposing figures. Human rights groups and opposition leaders have said the election outcome could be manipulated, though authorities have promised transparency during this process.
It is expected that the election winner will again be announced as the current prime minister. One of the strongest reasons for this prediction is the fact that its main rival, Khaleda Zia, is detained on charges of corruption, writes “CNN”
