A project launched in October 2016 with strong support from President Emomali Rakmon, the Rogun dam site has not been completed, only one of the six generators was put to work Friday.
The project is expected to be completed for ten years and will produce 3 600 megawatts, or the equivalent of three new generation nuclear reactors selling the Russian group “Rostom” in the region.
For Tajikistan, which suffers from an ongoing electricity deficit and frequent blackouts in summer, Rgoun dam is vital, as President Rakhmon himself has often emphasized.
The project entrusted to the Italian company “Salin Impregilo” for $3.9 billion is located at 60 miles [100 km] east of Dusanbe capital and will be 335m high, higher than the Chinese dam “Jinping I”, the highest of its kind in the world.
