Also with the referendum in Taiwan, elections were held.
President Tsai Inng-wan resigned as leader of Taiwan's ruling party following losses in local elections.
Its pro-independence Democratic Progress Party (DPP) lost in more than half of the 13 cities and districts it won in 2014.
Taiwan's relations with China have deteriorated since Tsai came to power in 2016.
Beijing has refused to communicate with it because it does not recognise an agreement reached between the two sides in 1992, which says Taiwan is part of China.
