The Kosovo Government's decision on customs tax application at 100 per cent value to products imported from Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina has contributed to the raising of prices of several essential food items in Kosovo.
Of the essential expensive food products are flour, bread, sugar, and oil.
Last week when the decision came into effect, Kosovo Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj, but also representatives of economic and production subjects in the country have called on businesses not to raise the prices of articles that have been imported from Serbia.
Some citizens consider the price hikes hasty.
Hannah, a citizen from Pristina, says what is seen is at the price of flour.
Recent <x0Ds in stores I've noticed price hikes, such as flour, oil and bread. Sun and bread are more challenging, while there are sufficient alternatives to other articles. I don't know why so quickly prices have increased for Serbian products. But, on the other hand, some of the local articles are cheaper than a week ago”, she says.
grain processing companies acknowledge that they have increased the price of flour, a change that has also contributed to the increase in the price of bread in some countries, which from 0.30 now costs 0.40 euros.
The price of flour on the Kosovo market differs depending on the region. Until the tax was introduced, the price for 100kg of flour has been around 32 euros, while the price is currently up to 36 euros.
