Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has for the first time directly accused the Saudi government of killing journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
“We know that the order to kill Khashoggi came from the highest levels of Saudi government,” he wrote in an article in the Washington Post. But underscoring Turkey's <x2-second military ties” with Saudi Arabia, he added he did not believe King Salman was involved.
Khashoggi was killed at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on 2 October this year. Turkish investigators believe the journalist, who was living in exile, drowned during his visit to Turkey to collect documents for his future marriage to a Turkish citizen.
His body has not been found, and an assistant to President Erdogan, Yasin Aktay, has said he believes it has disintegrated into acid after cutting.
The murder, initially covered by Saudi officials, triggered a diplomatic crisis between Saudi Arabia and its allies. Saudis have arrested 18 suspects, who, they say, will be prosecuted in Saudi Arabia.
Turkey wants them extradited.
A memorial service marking four weeks since the journalist's death has been held in Washington/21 Media.
