President Donald Trump has dramatically stepped up pressure on Tehran, withdrawing from the deal with internationals aimed at ending his nuclear programme, and imposing a series of rounds of unilateral American sanctions.
The latest range of measures has been defined as the most severe so far, aimed at significantly reducing the vital exports of Iranian oil, and of course disrupting the banks of the Islamic Republic with the international financial network.
Speaking in Singapore before a summit, Bolton said:
We think the government is under real pressure and of course, it is our goal to squeeze them very hard. And as the British say, we crush them until they crack the core. We will also continue to strongly increase sanctions, and not only that, but also make sure of their implementation”.
Sanctions have been rejected by the other parties of the 2015 agreement, aimed at ending Iran's nuclear direction, such as Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia, these countries that have pledged to keep the accord alive. Meanwhile, UN inspectors say Iran is adhering to terms of the agreement.
Washington has called for Iran to end policies that are rooted in the Islamic revolution of 1979, including its support for certain groups involved in regional wars, such as the Iraqi Hezbollah movement, but also the development of missiles.
The only support for the position of the United States has come from Iran's biggest regional rivals, such as Saudi Arabia and Israel. The International Monetary Fund, meanwhile, predicts sanctions will cause Iran's economy to contract 1.5 per cent this year and 3.6 per cent next year.
