Despite reducing extreme poverty, nearly half of the world's population lives on less than $5.50 a day (4.76 euros), and the poorest share in rich world economies is increasing, the World Bank has announced (WB).
In the semi-year report, WB has published extensive analysis of poverty to show the backlog of several countries, although the share of those who live in extreme poverty by earning less than $1.90 a day, according to agencies has continued to decline in recent years, broadcast newspapers.net.
Based on expanded criteria for poverty, the report finds that the number of poor people worldwide still “is unacceptable large”, as long as economic growth fruits “are not equal among the states' regions”.
Although global economic growth has slowed in recent years, the total number of people living in poverty has dropped from over 68 million between 2013 and 2015 to a population of the United Kingdom or Thailand.
Despite improvements, the report says that current trends show that the World Bank's goal of reducing global poverty to less than three percent of the world's population could be elusive.
