Local judges estimate that it was applied “armirre” and “racist”.
The state of Washington, located in the northwest of the United States, which has not applied any execution since 2010, thus becomes the 20th capital condemned state, writes ASTH.
The death penalty “is not unconstitutional in itself, but it is abolished because it applies arbitraryly and with a racist prejudice”, the court praised in a unanimously handed down ruling.
Its use differs according to the crime site, residence site, budgetary resources (of courts) and the race of accused”, judges write in this statement.
“As applied in our state, it accomplishes no legitimate purpose in itself. So it violates the Constitution”, the judges conclude, before converting to life sentences of all capital sentences pronounced in the state of Washington.
