Russia's President Vladimir Putin warned on Wednesday of a new arms race, if America withdraws from the nuclear arms treaty, he even added that Russia will respond to “in the same nature” to any new American missile located on Europe's territory.
During the past weekend, US President Donald Trump caused global concern when he said he could cancel a treaty on nuclear weapons signed during the Cold War period, the so-called “INF” which prohibits the production of medium-range missiles action and nuclear warheads.
Speaking after meeting with Trump National Security Adviser John Bolton, whom he hosted during Tuesday, Putin warned that abandoning the treaty and failing to extend another key agreement on gun control, known as “NUE START” (The new beginning) would cause a new arms race and put Europe at risk.
Putin said undoing a global weapons control system was the risky “x1>, adding that Russia is concerned by the fact that the United States has already abandoned the treaty against ballistic missiles, are considering being withdrawn from “INF”, while the future of “below START” remains unclear.
“There remains nothing but a new arms race”, he said at a press conference following discussions with Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Cute.
Russian president said that if Washington goes towards abandoning “INF” and transfers more rockets to Europe, then Russia would respond to “the same way”.
Could we respond? He asked. Yes, we will respond and it will be something very rapid and effective”.
Putin added that any European country that would agree to host US missiles would be put in the face of danger of a Russian attack. “These are clear things”, the Russian leader said. We would once again return to a situation similar to the Persing missiles in Europe”, he added, referring to American missiles deployed in Western Europe in the years of 50.
Putin stated, however, that he sees no reason to put Europe in the face of danger, so he accused the United States of violating the “treaty. INF”
However, Putin and Trump will take part in an event in Paris on November 11th, which will mark the commemoration of the last 100th anniversary of World War I. Kremlin said Wednesday he is ready to discuss the possibility of a summit between Putin and Trump in Washington next year.
