Now, the hills of the country's northwestern province at Khiber Paktunkhwa are covered with new trees.
The massive reforestation project called “Cunami of a billion trees” has managed to plant 350,000 hectares of tree land, also helping natural regeneration, to restore the region's poor forests and to combat the effects of climate change.
Decades of cut and natural disasters have drastically reduced Pakistan's forests. The figures for general coverage of the country's forests range between 2% and 5% of the earth's surface. However, Pakistan has one of the lowest forest coverage levels in the region.

Khyber Pahtunkhwa had lost large areas of wood due to massive logging and landslides. In 2016, frequent floods hit the province, killing dozens of people. The project cost 169 million
