Matthew Shepherd lies in Washington's National Cathedral, 20 years after he was brutally beaten and killed because of his sexuality. The first publicly declared homosexual bishop Gene Robinson has led the mortar ceremony, translating Periscopi into Albanian.
The man responsible for his murder in 1998 admitted that he was targeted by Shepard because of his sexual orientation. Shepard's murder will be remembered as one of the worst hate crimes against LGBT persons in the US.
In 2009, United States Congress passed Matthew Law. Shepard, extending the law on crimes based on hatred to include him against sexual orientation. Shepard is one of 220 Americans buried in the capital's cathedral, including former President Woodrow Wilson and Helen Keller.
