Some of them broke Guatemala's border fences, but then clashed with Mexican police.
On Friday, American President Donald Trump thanked Mexico for its attempt to stop the mining caravan, reports the BBC.
Migrants, mainly from Honduras, say they are fleeing violence and poverty, including women and children.
President Trump, who has threatened to close the US border and cut off aid to countries allowing the convoy to pass, said the military would intervene if necessary.
“They better turn back, they will not enter the country”, Trump told reporters Friday.
After talks on border security in Mexico, State Secretary Mike Pompeo said the situation was reaching a crisis moment”.
Many of the migrants have temporarily broken the barricades on a bridge crossing the river border between Guatemala and Mexico.
Tens of Mexican police in this riot march threw tear gas to force migrants to retreat after they threw stones.
Some of them have prayed that God softens Trump's heart after the suffering they are experiencing on these difficult journeys.
