The best practices in dealing with violent extremism and radicalism leading to terrorism (VERLT), especially the challenge of returning foreign fighters, is the focus of the three-day international Conference that in organising the O Mission The SEU in Skopje is currently being held in Ohrid.
Local and international experts from the region are participating in the rally, as well as Austria, Hungary, Romania, Slovenia and Turkey.
“The acts of terrorism, radicalism to violent extremism and the phenomenon of returning foreign fighters are international challenges to institutions that enforce the law”, the O Mission chief stressed. The SEU in Skopje, Ambassador Clemens Koya in his speech to conference participants.
In that case, he highlighted the general social approach “during dealing with such challenges, including power, local self-government, civic society and communities.
“Work in our local community level is essential and we hope this conference will enable the management of crisis situations caused by violent extremism and support multilateral approach in dealing with these situations”, Koja added.
Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Agim Nuhiu stressed that the phenomenon of foreign fighters in its privacy today is a top priority of the international community's agenda and presents real challenge for both international and local laws.
This relatively current phenomenon in our region and more broadly deserves considerable attention, and I believe this international conference is an excellent opportunity to see the entire photo”, Nuhiu said.
The OSCE mission actively supports the activities of the Government of Macedonia towards the preparation for the construction of the National Strategy for Combating Terrorism and the fight against violent extremism, as well as concrete action plans. The mission supports implementation of plans through organisation of training and international conferences like this, as well as through public events at local level.
