Lee was punished at a session in Seoul on Friday on charges of bribery, embezzlement and abuse of power, ordering him to pay even $11.5m in fines.
The former president on the other side has claimed the charges are politically motivated.
He has become the fourth former South Korean leader to have been imprisoned, following his predecessor's imprisonment in April.
Park Geun-hye has been sentenced to 33 years in prison after being found guilty of abuse of power.
Lee wasn't present during the court hearing because of what poor health was said.
Meanwhile, the Court in Seoul has said that the “severe punishment for the accused has been inevitable” due to the serious nature of the crime.
The court has found that the former leader of this company, Lee Kun-hee, has taken money in billion values from Samsung Company in exchange for the pardon of the head of the company.
However, the company has denied giving former president money. /rel
