UN warns of possibility of terrorist attacks in northern Kosovo

The US State Department has warned American citizens planning to come to Kosovo, especially in the northern part Mitrovica, Leposaviq, Zubin Potok and Zvecan led to be careful, the American Embassy's new announcement of trips to Pristina said. This Embassy, which has conveyed the UN warning, which is required by American citizens who want to come to Kosovo, requires increased care from them because of possible riots, but also possible terrorist attacks.

“terrorist groups continue to plan possible attacks across the Balkans, including Kosovo. Terrorists can attack tourist locations, bus stations, markets/markets, local government buildings, hotels, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, parks, major sports and cultural events, educational institutions, airports and other public spaces. In addition, across Kosovo there are politically motivated violence”, said at the UN warning of American citizens travelling to Kosovo, Koha.net reports.

However, The UN says that if American citizens decide to travel to Kosovo, they should avoid demonstrations, be alert in countries that are frequented by Westerners, monitor local media for recent news and adapt their plans based on new information.

“Subscribe to the Smart Travel Program (STEP) to accept reports and make it easier to find you in emergencies. Follow the State Department on Facebook and Twitter. Review the Kosovo Crime and Security Report. American citizens travelling abroad must always have a support plan for emergency situations”, the US State Department says.

In this warning, The UN says parts to be avoided in Kosovo are northern Mitrovica, Leposaviqi, Zubin Potok and Zvecani.

“Tensions within and between communities in northern Kosovo continue to fuel violence, demonstrations and other riots in northern Mitrovica, Leposaviq, Zubin Potok and in Zvecan. Although recent riots have been politically interconnected and do not include tourists or members of the international community, random passersby may be affected if violent incidents” occur, the UN says, Koha.net reports.
The US government is also said to have limited opportunities to provide emergency services in northern Kosovo, since “travel to northern Mitrovica, in Leposaviq, Zvecan's Zubin Potok is limited”.
