North Korea is trying to steal bitumen and other digital currency from holders, and may soon start targeting people all over the world, researchers warn.
Cyber security experts have discovered a recent malware campaign targeting the users of digital waves and exchanges in South Korea,
They expect similar attacks to be used to steal digital currency from people in other countries in the near future, especially if South Korea presents the ban on trade, as its government has threatened.
“This campaign at the end of 2017 is a continuation of North Korea's interest in digital currency, which we now know, includes a wide range of activities, including mining, sandsomware and full theft”, said the cyber security firm Record Futurre.
This is the attack of May WannaCry, most of North Korean digital waves operations have targeted South Korean users and exchanges, but we expect this trend to change in 2018,”theson Company.
The price of bitumen and other digital coins fell last week, after the South Korean government announced it would ban digital currency trading.
If this were to happen, North Korean hackers would be forced to look further at the targets.
“While South Korean exchanges harden their networks and the government imposes stricter regulations on digital waves, exchanges and users in other countries should be aware of the threat level increase by North Korean actors”, adds “Recredated Framework”.
Numerous recent reports have concluded that North Korean hackers are increasingly targeted in digital currency exchanges and investors in order to raise funds under strict economic sanctions.
It is believed that such attacks will not only continue but also spread.
“We estimate that while South Korea responds to these thefts by increasing security and perhaps by stopping the trade of digital waves, they will become more severe targets, forcing North Korean actors to demand exchanges and users even in other countries”, warns “Record Futurre”.
