Tehran MP Mahmoud Sadeghi announced on Tuesday that arrests during the protests are much higher than previous estimates reported by state news agency “ICANA”
The various security and intelligence forces kept protesters, making it difficult to know the exact number of prisoners, Sadeghi has said, reports “Al Jazeera”, the Periscope broadcast.
About 1,000 were reportedly arrested during almost a week of demonstrations that began in December.
Violence erupted at several gatherings, leaving at least 22 people dead.
The riots spread to more than 80 rural cities and cities late last month, as thousands of young working class Iranians expressed anger at corruption, unemployment and a deepening gap between rich and poor in the largest anti-government demonstrations since 2009.. /Periscopi/
