The chief of the known Russian human rights group, Memorial, in Chechnya's office, Oyub Titiyaev, has been arrested in connection with drug charges, Czech officials have said and a lawyer from the memorial group.
Another activist of the Memorial group has dismissed these accusations by dismissing them as absurd.
The Memorial Group is trying to find out where Titus is, as he had not appeared at a meeting early yesterday morning.
His disappearance highlights concerns about the dangers facing human rights advocates, journalists and opponents of Chechen leader Ramzan Cadyrov, who is backed by Russia's president, Vladimir Putin.
According to the Memorial Group, a celebrity has seen Titusiev's car stop by the police as he planned to meet Mr. Titusiev. A few hours later, it was announced that Titus was at police headquarters in the town of Kurchaloi.
When his lawyer arrived in this city, the police told him he is not under arrest in this city.
The Memorial Group has expressed concern and has demanded that the Russian government submit detailed information on Titus' whereabouts.
