The German government is facing appeals to prevent arms exports to Turkey after reports were published that German tanks “Leopard” was being used in the attack on the YPG Kurds.
Some German politicians have demanded that any movement to approve an update of the tank agreement be halted. Turkish forces launched an attack west of Syria on Saturday.
While debates in Germany have sparked only two weeks after the two countries' foreign ministers promised to improve bilateral relations.
Relations between the two NATO member states have dramatically deteriorated in recent years. According to reports, on Friday, Berlin was preparing to approve a request from Turkey for the German arms producer Rheinmetall to review its tanks “Leopard 2” to make less vulnerable to explosions.
Tanks are thought to have been used by Turkey even against the Islamic state group in Syria. However, defence experts have claimed in the media the letter that the latest images from the Turkish-led olive branch operation show tanks are being used against Kurdish groups.
Politicians on both sides of the political spectrum have spoken against reviewing the agreement and urged the government to clarify its position on Turkish offensive in the African region of northern Syria.
