alcohol consumption increases the risk of cancer by damaging DNA, scientists have discovered for the first time, and for that, health experts call for reduced consumption.
Alcohol contributes to more than 12,000 cancer cases each year in Britain, but no one has until now shown why it is harmful, writes Telegraph.co.uk.
A new study by the Cambridge University's <x0 Medical Research Council laboratory of Molecular Biology” has found that when the body processes alcohol, it produces a chemical called “acetaldeid” that is harmful to DNA.
The damage is caused by blood stem cells, which create red and white blood cells that keep oxygen in the body and help to combat infections.
Researchers have found that <x0acetaldehydi” attacks stem cell DNA, thus forever changing the genetic code and causing cancer.
Researchers have demanded that alcohol consumption be reduced for this reason.
Alcohol is linked to the creation of seven types of cancer - liver, breast, intestines, upper throat, mouth, esophagus, and larynx.
