A Swiss magazine a few years ago described Ueli Leuenberger as the Serb housing «, namely a man who cares for the Albanian community in Switzerland as his family. During his long political career, Leuenberger has been chairman of the Swiss Green Party and deputy in the Swiss parliament.

As a member of the Swiss Parliament's Foreign Policy Commission, he has been among the biggest supporters of Kosovo's independence. Following recent warnings in Kosovo for the establishment of the new Leuenberger government has shown despair and has directed sharp criticism of the political class in Kosovo.

I will further support Kosovo and its people, there and here in Switzerland. But, of course not this government with the taste of the banana republic”, Leuenberger wrote his Facebook prose.

In another post he wrote in French: “Kosova amour... qualmsse et quelle kolère! What grief and anger!” In the mid - 1990 ' s, Leuenberger founded in Geneva University The Albanaise populist (Albanian People's University), a centre that continues to help integrate Albanians with different programmes.

This institution has also served as a center of cultural and patriotic activities since its establishment. Leuenberger has been committed to the rights of Kosovo Albanians since the 1980s. The world he met with Januz Salihin, a persecuted Yugoslav regime who had sought asylum in Switzerland.

In 1986 the Swiss authorities rejected Salih's request for asylum and sent him back to Yugoslavia. The Swiss government's move sparked Leuenberger's endless anger, which has since remained linked to the fate of Albanians under Yugoslavia.

After the expulsion to Yugoslavia, Salihi was arrested by police, tortured and sentenced to several years in prison. This case also sparked reactions in the Swiss media and organisations to protect asylum seekers' rights. The abuse of Januz Salih led to the worsening relations between Switzerland and then Yugoslavia.
