As a member of the Swiss Parliament's Foreign Policy Commission, he has been among the biggest supporters of Kosovo's independence. Following recent warnings in Kosovo for the establishment of the new Leuenberger government has shown despair and has directed sharp criticism of the political class in Kosovo.

After the expulsion to Yugoslavia, Salihi was arrested by police, tortured and sentenced to several years in prison. This case also sparked reactions in the Swiss media and organisations to protect asylum seekers' rights. The abuse of Januz Salih led to the worsening relations between Switzerland and then Yugoslavia.
