The unnamed man had fought against Iraqi government forces since 2015 and was the first Russian-born militant to be sentenced to death in Baghdad, officials have said.
The AFP agency has reported that the person was 28 years old and that during the investigation he was notified of Islam in Moscow by several construction workers from Uzbekistan.
After arriving in Iraq, he was named Abu Yasmina al-Russi, and has announced that he was injured in combat before fighting in Mosul.
Iraqi forces have occupied hundreds of Islamic State militants during the Mosul liberation operation.
The Reuters agency has reported that authorities are also holding 1,400 wives and children from suspected militants, including some from Russia, Tajikistan and Azerbaijan.
