At the University Clinical Centre in Kosovo, there are eight patients in the surveillance coma, respectively.
Kosovo does not have specialised rehabilitation centres for patients in a coma. Doctors say that these eight patients are located in this clinic, in the absence of the country adequate for them.
Nehat Battiu, anesthesiologist told Radio Europe free that all patients who cannot recover for 48 hours from intensive treatment are brought to the clinic for anesthesiology, although it is not an adequate ward.
It's not our responsibility to keep those patients there, but in the absence of space we keep them in clinics and care about them. There is no rehabilitation center for these patients since the war. We do not mind, but if it were a center for patients in a coma, we would have better access for patients in need”, says Battiu.
Meanwhile, Basri Lenyan, director of Emergency Clinic at the University Clinical Centre in Kosovo, told Free Europe Radio that for patients in a coma, respectively, as they are called in medical terminology, a rehabilitation centre is more than necessary. According to him, the responsible institutions would have to take concrete steps so that as soon as Kosovo has one.
And according to the emergency risk and anesthesiology commitments, we've been looking for some years to become a national center for patients who are in deep sleep or comas. Most states of this component are regulated and after some time in intensive service, and after their rehabilitation this category requires state support”, Lenyan says.
Mr. Lenyan also says that Kosovo has two rehabilitation centers, but that it needs to adapt so that patients can be put in a coma.
We should have a rehabilitation center that would meet the terms. We have two centers one in the Klokots and one in Pec and they should be completed with professional staff, where we need a multidisciplinary range that requires commitment, and this should be solved in high circles. This is the burden for our services instead of dealing with cases that have benefits of life”, Lenyan said.
In the Ministry of Health, however, it has declared that new intensive treatment is planned within two years. According to them, there will be multiple capacities and new equipment, which services will be much better for patients, including caregivers. / REL/
