Between hurricanes and other crises in the United States, many Americans cannot have heard of the ongoing humanitarian disaster in Myanmar (also known as Burma). Over the past two weeks, over 120,000 Roingya people have fled Myanmar to Bangladesh because of the violence they have been experiencing constantly. The situation is so terrible that it has gone so far that it has already been designated genocide.
Ringya, who has been described as one of the most persecuted groups on the planet, is a Muslim minority group without citizenship that lives mainly in the state of Rakhina of Myanmar.
They are not considered citizens by the government of Myanmar, despite the fact that they have lived Myanmar for generations, said “Newsweek”, Periscopi broadcasts.
Hundreds of thousands of Ringya have moved, and UN officials have determined that more than 1,000 civilians may have been killed by the Myanmar Army at the end of 2016.
Crime reportedly committed against Roggaya is certainly serious, but are they genocide?
Speaking of the situation in Myanmar during a speech in Istanbul, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said: “has a genocide there”. “Those who close their eyes for this genocide committed under the cover of democracy are their collaborators, he added.
Raphael Lemkin émkin a lawyer of Polish-Hebrew descent who lost most of his family during the Holocaust é invented the term <x0genocide” after doing extensive research on Armenians who were massacred by Turks.
Genocide stems from the ancient Greek word “genos”, meaning race or tribe, and “acids” from the Latin word, meaning murder.
Lemkin defines genocide as “a co-ordinated plan of various actions aimed at destroying the essential foundations of the lives of national groups, with the aim of destroying these groups”.
When asked about the situation in Myanmar, a US State Department spokesman has not specifically addressed the discussion of the genocide term, but he told Newsweek that the UN “United States are in close contact with the government of Burma for the situation in Rakhina and have discussed it publicly and privately on the issue at the highest levels”, adding “to which the government and security forces act to bring the responsibility for the attacks to justice, we urge them to do so in a way that is in accordance with the rule of human law and the rights of the past <x>/Periscopi/
