We should not celebrate because some Cumhuriyet journalists are facing unfair and groundless charges... they have been deprived of freedom”, Gursel, who was imprisoned for 11 months, said.

17 employees of the Cumhuriyet newspaper are accused of supporting terrorism by reporting on three groups Turkey considers a terrorist organisation. This occasion had sparked international criticism.

The P24 press freedom group has said 171 journalists are prisoners, most of them arrested after the failed coup in Turkey.
