The first KPC leader was appointed Lieutenant General Agim Ceku.

Currently, the KSF mission is to carry out crisis response operations in Kosovo and abroad; civil protection operations within Kosovo; and to assist civil authorities in response to natural disasters and other emergencies.
On March 4, 2014 The government at the time led by Hashim Thaci had made the decision to form the Kosovo Armed Forces, as the Kosovo Army, which is expected to achieve capacities that can ensure Kosovo's integrity, a decision that never succeeded in finalising.
According to the Kosovo Constitution to vote on the KSF in the Armed Forces, two-thirds votes of the Serb community's deputies are needed.
