The 60-year-old, accused of running the Sinaloa cartel, one of the world's largest drug empires, was extradited to New York on January 19th and is being held in solitary confinement in Manhattan pending next month's trial during April, broadcast Arab portals.info
But in a new court appearance, his defence lawyers said his extradition violated the terms of Mexico's initial agreement to send Guzman to Texas or California.
They also claim that the conditions in which Guzman is in are rhetorical.
These conditions are equal to torture. Had Mexico been advised about these conditions, it would almost certainly not have approved the ban and pursuit of Guzman”, his lawyers have said.
His lawyers are also challenging the American government's desire to seize $14 billion worth of drug sales, saying there is no evidence that the US has requested permission from Mexico over this seizure.
Guzman faces several charges, drug trafficking, arms trafficking and conspiracy at the US Federal Court in Brooklyn, New York. If convicted, he will likely spend the rest of his life in an American maximum security prison.
