President Donald Trump has been addressing the base of his supporters as the investigation deepens for possible co-operation of members of his election campaign with Russia.
President Trump attended an electoral-style rally in the state of West Virginia, where he was widely voted in favour during last November's elections. He returns to the base of his supporters as he faces a low level of approval in polls and a slow legislative agenda in Congress.
As U.S. Voice correspondent Jim Malone announces, signs of dissatisfaction are already being shown among the Republicans.
Returned among his loyal supporters, President Trump seeks to balance the perception that he is leading a troubled administration.
America's “Americars of all kinds are joining with a simple purpose to make America grand again! ”, President Trump said.
He opposed the investigation for Russia, calling the investigation “legally a site”.
We didn't win because of Russia. We won from you. They want to take you away from the leadership you want, through a false story that has been through us all and particularly through our country and our Constitution”, President Trump said.
The gathering was under way as special prosecutor Robert Mueller was announced to have asked for a grand jury to present evidence of his investigation to Russia.
President Trump continues to attract large crowds as he faces difficulties in national polls.
According to the latest poll by the Quinnipiac University, the level of approval for it has dropped to 33%, and support for it is declining among his party.
The subx0> Republicans certainly continue to support it, but now at 70% level, up from 90% it used to be. So, he's losing Republicans”, says Tim Malloy, of Queennipiac University.
This is evident in the tense relationship between the president and the republican majority in Congress, in particular following the failure in the Senate for the healthcare system.
Republican leader in Senate Mitch McConnell rejected President Trump's call to change parliamentary rules.
“Sic I have often told the president and you, we don't have the votes needed to change the rules of the Senate”, declared the leader of the republican majority, Senator Mitch McConnell.
President Trump signed the law on sanctions against Russia, which was adopted with great two-party support in the House of Representatives and in the Senate.
But, he also wrote on Twitter, blaming Congress for poor relations with Russia, and thus prompting a response by Republican Senator Bob Corker.
I think we acted in defense of national interest. It is Putin, who, through his actions, has reduced the relationship to the worst level since 1991”, said Republican Senator Bob Corker, chairman of the Foreign Relations Commission.
Mr. Trump's martial nature motivates his opponents and also attracts his support base.
“He conducted an unusual electoral campaign as a tough candidate. And it hasn't changed this aspect even after taking office”, says Kyle Condick of University of Virginia.
Already, the president and Congress will be fired from Washington. Lawmakers have begun their annual August break as President Trump begins 17 days of vacation at his golf complex in New Jersey.
