High temperatures recorded in Italy last week have marked the country's glaciers, with a summer ski resort in Stelvio Pass that has been forced to make the historic decision and suspend activities due to the serious state of the Alpine glacier.
Much of southern and eastern Europe is melting under temperatures of over 40 degrees Celsius as a result of a heat wave called “Lucifer”, which has caused forest fires to spread, damage crops, and forced authorities to issue warnings and advice to residents.
High extreme temperatures have also been recorded by Stelvio Pass in the Alps at a height of 10,000 feet [3 thousand m] above sea level.
Combined with a little snowfall over the past three years, conditions in glaciers are difficult, and ski summer resort director Umberto Capitani says skiers have enjoyed their last day in the snow before the resort closes.
At six o'clock in the morning, at the height of 2770 meters in Stelvio Pass, the temperature was 12 degrees Celsius. This is almost an extreme temperature for this time of year. We've had very few snowfalls in alpe for three years now and with extreme heat in the past two weeks we've had trouble in the high parts of the glacier, where skiing is practiced in summer. Now, we need to suspend all activities until a certain date of”, says Umberto Capitani.
The air - shot images of one - drop ice showed the glacier in the melting of usually white ice that was seen only on the top of the mountain. Melting glaciers also bring various dangers, first loss of water supply, but it also increases the possibility of falling rocks at the risk of human lives.
