Migrants raise Germany's population for 18.6 million

Noting an increase of 8.5 per cent of the population with a background of first or second generation migrants, compared to last year's figures, the Federal Statistics Office (Destatis) said it is the highest annual <x0-year arrival since the population census in early 2005”.

New statistics show that in 2016, some 18.6 million people in Germany were immigrants.

The extraordinary “Relation was mainly due to the high level of foreign immigration, including people seeking refuge, in 2015 and 2016”, said “Destatis” on Tuesday.

More than 1.6 million asylum seekers have reportedly entered Europe between 2014 and 2016, leading to the largest refugee crisis since World War II, Russia Today” reported.

Most have settled in Germany. Since 2015, the government of Chancellor Merkel has been conducting what is now known as the migration policy “open-door”, despite numerous public criticisms.
