Thousands of moderate Syrian rebels were trained and armed to the corner of the CIA programme, launched in 2013 under former US President Barack Obama. But the goal of the operation to pressure Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, which is increasingly beginning to manifest trouble for peace in Syria. This pressure also results from Russia, which put its troops and air force in support of the 2015 Assad regime.
Support for the CIA-backed scheme was further reduced in 2016 when a brutal Russian-backed government attacked rebels from the areas they held in the Syrian city of Aleppo.
Incumbent President Donald Trump reportedly made the decision to close the training programme a month ago, after previously consulting national security adviser H.R. McMister and CIA Director Mike Pompeo.
“CIA” and “The White House” has declined to comment on the report. “spokeswoman White House” Sarah Sanders said at a press conference that she was not aware whether Trump discussed this issue with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where the latter had a meeting in Germany's Hamburg suburb at the G-20 summit this month.
After this meeting, the US and Russia announced they have reached an agreement to support a new ceasefire to the southwestern Syria along the Jordanian border, an area where many CIA-backed rebels are fighting against Bashar al-Assad forces./Periscopi/
