The meeting lasted more than two hours, while only 35 minutes was scheduled.
In brief comments to the media, before the meeting, Trump said he expects “many positive things” for Moscow and Washington.
Trump said it is “nder” to meet with the Russian counterpart, while Putin said it is the happy “” to meet the American president.
They did not answer journalists' questions before entering the private meeting.
After closed-door talks, Putin told Russian media he has discussed a range of issues with the American president, “including Ukraine, Syria, other problems and several bilateral questions”.
“We have also returned to the fight against terrorism and cyber security”, Putin said.
The meeting, the first eye-to-face since Trump took office in January, comes at the time of a deep crisis in bilateral relations, due to conflicts in Syria and Ukraine, as well as Russia's alleged intervention in the US presidential elections.
Trump has repeatedly called for improving relations with Moscow, even though his administration, publicly, has continued pressure on Russia due to the illegal annexation of the Ukrainian Crimea Peninsula and support for armed separatists in eastern Ukraine.
On Thursday, in a speech in Warsaw, Trump has called on Russia “to ban destabilising activities in Ukraine and elsewhere”, and has stressed Washington's commitment to NATO, which Putin has long accused of rising tensions in eastern Europe.
The Trump-Putin meeting also comes at a time of tensions among the world's 20 most industrialized countries, due to trade and climate change.
Their summit in Hamburg, which began Friday, is being delivered to violent anticapitalist protests.
