Extreme left-left protesters threw bottles, fireworks and other items, whose police responded to with water cannons and tear gas, AFP reports.
The protest coincides with US President Donald Trump's arrival in Germany, to attend the G20 meeting to be held this weekend in Hamburg.
German police had warned that 8,000 in attendance at the protest called “Wee to Hell” (Welcome to hell) were willing to use violence, while the highest security official in Hamburg said 1,000 were left extremists from countries like Italy and Scandinavian countries.
Protest organiser Andreas Blichschmidt said German authorities and the Interior Intelligence Service have carried out a massive campaign on the eve of today's event to discredit participants and prevent people from joining him.
