The communities of Greek Cyprus and Turkish Cyprus have been divided since the 1974 conflict erupted.
The two areas divide a line that is administered by the United Nations.
Talks in Switzerland, which have been launched since January, have been seen as a good chance of reunifying Cyprus, but, despite some signs of progress, they ended without any agreement.
Unfortunately, the deal was not possible. The conference is closed without solving this long-term and dramatic problem”, said UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.
One of the most difficult points has been the possibility of the deployment of 30,000 Turkish troops even after reunification.
Turkish President Recep Tayip Erdogan has said their removal “does not come to question” unless Greece removes its 1,000 troops.
