The president and delegation accompanying him left Hamburg shortly after meeting with President Xi.
Trump-Putin appointment
It was the most eagerly expected part of the G20 summit activities. United States President Donald Trump sat down for the first time alongside Russia's leader, under the two-day summit. The spirit of the meeting was friendly, and as President Trump put it, the US expects “positive things in the relationship between Russia and the United States”. Mr. Putin said it was the “pleasure” they met personally, and President Trump replied that the honored “ ” they met.
The meeting lasted more than two hours, much more than anticipated, that President Trump had to postpone a planned meeting with British Prime Minister Theresa May on Saturday.
Despite the friendly tone of the meeting, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the American leader had repeatedly asked Mr. Putin about allegations that Russia had intervened in last year's American elections.
Russians have denied any kind of interference in the election process.
President Trump said he had heard strong statements from President Putin that it was not true and that Russian authorities had not intervened in the election and Mr. Trump said he accepts these statements (Mr. Putin's). So much”, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.
At the end of the summit, Mr. Putin told reporters they should ask Mr. Trump whether he accepted his statements or not.
US officials have not confirmed Mr. Lavrov's description of President Trump's hearing on Mr. Putin's comments.
