US Ambassador to Kosovo Greg Delaway has spoken on July 4th, US Independence Day, saying the American Constitution has been a model for many other countries.
He said 4 July is the anniversary of the signing of the declaration of independence, which has somehow been the first BRUT since then.
According to him, the challenges facing Kosovo are that many people feel that they are stuck in a country and do not see progress.
Of course, there were times in the U.S. when we were in such situations, when we had a kind of cramp, but they were all overcome when the country's leaders were together and worked for the good of the country. They have found different solutions, they have found different compromises on important questions”, US Ambassador Delawi said in an interview given to Radio Kosovo.
Radio Kosova: Mr. Ambassador, 4th of July is an important date for you Americans, but is it also special attention to others in the world?
Delawi: Thank you very much for the opportunity and it's a pleasure to be with you here. As mentioned, July 4th is the anniversary of the signing of the declaration of independence that has somehow been the first BREXT since then. But that moment also marked the foundations and foundation of the United States. So it's about July 4th, and the constitution that we also write down has been issued 11 years later. It's one of the holidays, which is certainly more enjoyable for Americans, because we have a chance to spend time with our families. There are also fireworks that we light and other forms of celebration with family members. It's probably one of the most popular parties for all Americans, not because of its symbol, but also because it marks the beginning of summer, it's the end of the school year, children are on vacation. So many Americans are likely to spend this party with their families and have a nice day in the United States.
Radio Kosova: Do you change the form of the independence party, with the change of governments, whether inside America or even its diplomats in the world?
Delawi: I think the 4th of July, the day of independence, depends on the people themselves for the celebration. The people are the ones who promote the celebration of this day. There's not much difference between year and year. And as for American diplomats who celebrate this holiday abroad, we usually hold the reception ceremony for Independence Day, where we invite many people from various areas of social and political life, with which we worked during the preliminary year, for example here in Kosovo. A few days ago we kept our national day. It's been a little different than the old times. But it's only been a wish to change a little bit the way we've been here for years.
Radio Kosova: Mr. Ambassador, are children being told in schools, in the US history of the constitution, about the first day 241 years when US independence was declared?
Delawi: Yes, they are. At least my kids who went to public school have learned about it, and this is an experience that is in all public schools. We in the United States appreciate that it is very important to learn not only our history but also world history. Children from early times are familiar with all events involving the American revolution, separation from the United Kingdom, and all significant events from 1776 to today.
Radio Kosova: The American Constitution has served as a model for other countries in the world?
Delawi: Yes, I think the Constitution of the United States has been a model for many other countries. The US is a democratic country, with old and continuous democracies. Many countries, which have other democratic systems that can change little from the American system, because many countries have the Assembly, or the Parliament, while we have Congress. However, the main topic, or key points of the United States Constitution, I think has been the basis for many other democratic countries and their constitutions, and that is very positive.
Radio Kosova: To end this conversation, Mr. Ambassador. What challenges do you come up with next year, a new US anniversary, whether in or outside the United States?
Delawi: I think it's important to see even the messages I said in my speech, at the celebration ceremony of July 4th, Independence Day, here at our embassy and you can find this speech on the embassy page. I think the challenges that Kosovo faces, since I work right in the relationship between Kosovo and the US, are in that many people feel that they are trapped in a country and do not see progress. Of course, there were times in the United States when we were in such situations when we seemed to have some kind of cramp, but they were all overcome when the local leaders became together and worked for the good of the country. They have found different solutions, found different compromises on important issues.
I think Kosovo is at a turning point. The people of Kosovo want progress. Many people are not seeing enough progress and should not be like a kind of impasse. The US wants to help Kosovo progress. We will continue to support Kosovo, as we see every day, sovereign, multiethnic country, in peace with its neighbours, which is fully integrated into the wider world community. And we are willing to work with the next generation of Kosovo leaders, who share the same values”.
