US President Donald Trump is expected to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital on Wednesday and start the process of moving his country's embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, said senior US officials. This action has caused global dissatisfaction by world leaders who asked Trump to [...]
The move has caused global disappointment by world leaders who urged Trump to reconsider the decision.
Israel conquered East Jerusalem at the end of the 1967 war with Syria, Egypt, and Jordan, while the western half of the holy city was conquered in the Arab-Israel War of 1948.
The Israeli invasion of East Jerusalem puts the entire city under de facto Israeli control. However, the jurisdiction of the state and ownership of Jerusalem is not recognised by the international community, including the United States, reports “Al Jazeera”, Periscopi broadcast.
The status of Jerusalem remains one of the main points of efforts to resolve the Palestinian-Israeln conflict.
International Community Position
Under the 1947 UN secession Plan for the division of historic Palestine between the Jewish and Arab states, Jerusalem has been granted special status and aims to be placed under international sovereignty and control. Special status was based on the religious importance of Jerusalem to three Abrahamic religions.
In the 1948 war, after the UN's recommendation to divide Palestine, Zionist forces took control of the western half of the city and declared the territory part of its state.
During the 1967 war, Israel seized the eastern half of Jerusalem, which was under Jordanian control at that time and continued effectively annexing Israeli law, bringing it directly under its jurisdiction, and leading to international rights violations.
In 1980, Israel passed “Jerusalem Law”, stating that “Jeruzalem, complete and united, is the capital of Israel”, forming the annexation of East Jerusalem.
In response, the UN Security Council adopted resolution 478 in 1980, announcing the <x0-> invalid” law.
The international community, including the United States, officially considers East Jerusalem to be occupied territory. In addition, no country in the world knows any part of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel except Russia, which announced recognition of Western Jerusalem as the capital of Israel earlier this year.
From now on, all foreign embassies are based on Tel Aviv.
Today, about 440,000 Palestinians in East Jerusalem have ID cards for <x0 permanent standing”. They also carry Jordanian temporary passports without a national identification number. That means they are not complete Jordanian citizens they need a work permit to work in Jordan and have no access to government services and benefits, such as reduced education fees.
The Palestinians in Jerusalem are essentially without citizenship stuck in legal oblivion. They are not citizens of Israel, nor are they citizens of Jordan or Palestine.
Any Palestinian who has lived outside the borders of Jerusalem for a certain period of time, whether in a foreign country or even in the West Coast, is in danger of losing his right to live there.
All the time, every Jew around the world has the right to live in Israel and gain Israeli citizenship under the Law of Israel for return.
Since 1967, Israel has revoted the status of 14,000 Palestinians, according to the Israeli rights group BʹTselem./Periscopi/
