Three people have been charged with the murder of Montenegrin journalist and blogger Daphne Carwana Gallizia. The George brothers and Alfred Degiorgio, 55 and 53, and Vincent Muscat, 55, denied the accusations but were convicted by the tribunal.
They were also accused of possession of explosives and illegal weapons. Carwana Gallizia died in an explosion shortly after she left her home in Bedniya, near Mosta, October 16.
“Panama Papers” was known for its blog accusing the highest politicians of corruption. On Monday, police arrested 10 Malaysian citizens in connection with the murder. Police operations were conducted in the city of Mars, and areas of Bugibba and Zebubug.
The blogger had accused the island's government of corruption. Local televisions report that only two weeks earlier, the victim had spoken to police about threats he had received.
The renowned journalist was killed four months after early elections, which were organised after she accused Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and his wife of linked to the “Panama Papers” scandal.
The journalist's accusation that the prime minister and his wife had bank accounts abroad to hide money from Azerbaijan's rulers brought down the government, although Muskat managed to win the elections again.
Prime Minister Muskat himself said that the murder of the journalist is barbarous and unacceptable, while promising that the culprits will certainly be found. In her latest blog post, Gallizia attacked opposition leaders and wrote that the political situation in the country is desperate.
